A mosquito carrying the West Nile virus has been identified in the city of Skopje. Amid this detection, officials reported the fifth fatality attributed to West Nile fever. According to Dr.
Fadil Can, Director of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, the deceased individual is a 73-year-old patient originating from Skopje Airport, Novo Lisice. The patient was admitted to the clinic in critical condition and presented with serious accompanying illnesses. Dr.
Can stated that the individual remained hospitalized at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases for a period of 22 days, requiring placement in intensive care and respiratory support. Nationally, the country has now recorded five confirmed deaths linked to the West Nile virus. At the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, a total of 21 patients have been hospitalized.
Of these admissions, the report confirms 18 instances of confirmed West Nile virus cases. The discovery of the virus-carrying mosquito underscores ongoing public health concerns regarding the spread of the West Nile virus. Medical personnel continue to monitor the situation closely to manage the influx of patients and prevent further transmission within the region.
The health authorities are advising vigilance and preventative measures in response to the confirmed cases and the presence of the vector.
