Macedonia Demands EU Guarantees Before Constitutional Changes
Skopje, North Macedonia – Macedonian government officials have stated that constitutional amendments will not proceed without explicit, written assurances from the European Union. At a press conference held in Skopje, Valentin Manasiaski emphasized the government’s position regarding the need for concrete safeguards. Manasiaski asserted that the country has incurred a “pre-scap price” – a cost resulting from past policies and the current administration’s stance – concerning withdrawals from constitutional changes.
He clarified that there will be “no” constitutional change “without” its own, clear, and written “guarantees.”
According to Manasiaski, Macedonia and its citizens deserve continued confidence in the European integration process. He reiterated that any future adjustments to the constitution will “not” be implemented “without” guarantees, specifically safeguarding national interests and providing certainty regarding their actual implementation. “There will be no more withdrawals without guarantees, without safeguards of national interests and without certainty that these withdrawals will really be made,” Manasiaski concluded.
The government’s position reflects a desire for a more secure and predictable pathway toward EU membership.
