Paris City Authorities Initiate Canal Cooling Amidst Heatwave

Paris is implementing a targeted cooling strategy in response to the ongoing heatwave, with city authorities authorizing the controlled pouring of water into the Seine canal. The initiative began today and will continue under close supervision. According to a statement released by Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire on Tuesday, as reported by Le Figaro, the action is intended to mitigate the canal’s impact as a significant source of heat during the extreme temperatures.

Restrictions are in place, limiting pouring to a 100-meter radius from the canal’s edge. Mayor Grégoire acknowledged concerns raised regarding the use of public resources, stating that it would be “a little absurd” to divert significant police resources to prevent individuals from accessing the canal. With temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius in mid-May, the authorities determined this approach to be the most effective method of relief.

The city’s response focuses on utilizing the canal directly to combat the rising temperatures. The authorities are overseeing the pouring operation to ensure responsible use of water resources.
