The historic strong earthquake occurred on Monday on the northwestern coast of Cuba, according to official reports, causing a business trip from the island of Mexico and Florida, which is commonly not prone to earthquakes. The USGS (United States Geological Survey) measured the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 degrees on a depth of 26 km with an epicenter 104 km west-northwest of Managua, Cuba, about four hours’ drive from the main city of Havana. The earthquake occurred on Monday in an area of the Caribbean that is unusual for earthquakes, said Paul Earle, a seismologist from the USGS, who noted that the earthquake occurred on a tectonic plate where earthquakes are usually less concentrated and less intense than when they occur on plate boundaries.
The earthquake with this magnitude did not occur within a radius of 200 miles (322 km) from Monday’s 1880 earthquake
