Stojanovski: The interests of the parties before the state – the opposition was undermined by the Electoral Code

Bojan Stojanovski has stated that Macedonia will be unable to implement the new electoral Code, citing opposition blockades as the cause. According to Stojanovski, this failure to enact the reform could result in the state losing 4.2 million euros. Stojanovski pointed out that while the final procedural hurdle for the electoral reform was reportedly cleared on July 15th, the Code was not included on the agenda during the subsequent plenary session.

He argued that this omission means the country cannot fulfill one of ten mandated obligations, directly leading to the potential loss of the specified funds. The opposition leader detailed the preceding negotiation period, stating that four months of talks took place within both the Ministry of Justice and the Assembly. Stojanovski alleged that during this time, the ruling majority pressured the opposition into signing a joint implementation agreement without granting the opposition representatives full participation in the negotiations.

These statements highlight a significant procedural impasse regarding the passage and implementation of the new electoral framework. The differing accounts regarding the negotiation process and the failure to finalize the Code have placed the state’s adherence to international obligations, and its associated funding, in question, according to Stojanovski.
