Macedonia remains among the most poorly regulated lands to guarantee workers’ rights

North Macedonia Ranked in Lower Category by Global Union Confederation

North Macedonia has been assessed as belonging to the fourth of five categories within the Global Union Confederation (ITUC), a classification based on the country’s statutory system of worker protection rights. The assessment was communicated by the Union of Trade Unions of Macedonia (SCM). SCM officials responded to the ITUC’s categorization, stating that it reflects a further decline in trade union freedoms within the country.

The ITUC issued a specific statement regarding North Macedonia, highlighting concerns about the monitoring and potential targeting of the Union of Trade Unions of Macedonia’s leadership and family. According to the ITUC, this scrutiny would begin in February 2026, when the president of SCM, Slobodan Trenadilov, and his family would be subject to observation by public authorities. The ITUC indicated that photographic evidence, potentially including images of children and family members, could be publicly disseminated.

The situation underscores ongoing concerns regarding the rights of workers and the role of union organizations in macedonia. The ITUC’s statement emphasizes the need for continued vigilance regarding trade union freedoms.
