Nikoloski: The biggest railway reform is coming – we are building new tracks, acquiring new locomotives, passenger wagons…

Aleksandar Nikolovski, the vice-premier and minister for transport, announced plans for a major overhaul of the national railway system. He stated that the planned reforms involve significant investment in infrastructure, including the construction of new locomotives and the acquisition of new rolling stock. Nikolovski presented this vision for a comprehensive transformation of the railway sector, suggesting that the current state, including the bankruptcy of former entities, provides an opportunity for substantial systemic change.

According to his statements, successfully executing this initiative is expected to drive serious economic growth and increase passenger numbers. A key element of this strategy is the commitment to developing the railway as a core backbone of the national economy. Further supporting these plans, the vice-premier and minister for transport signed a loan agreement with the World Bank for Macedonia, represented by Carol Mezhovan.

This agreement was formalized on June 29, 2026, at 2:07 p.m. The infusion of external funding, coupled with the planned investment in new assets, underscores a concerted effort to modernize the railway infrastructure. The focus remains on ensuring that the new locomotives and rolling stock will support a robust and expanding transportation network.
