Kallas Urges Continued Negotiations Between SAD and Iran, Calls for Pakistan’s Mediation

Brussels – European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, emphasized the importance of ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran on March 16, 2026. Speaking ahead of a Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Kallas stated that these discussions must align with the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy. The Council is currently focused on the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its potential ramifications.

A key concern is safeguarding freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway. Discussions are centered around possible contributions to the EU maritime security mission, Aspides, and the implementation of additional sanctions targeting Iran. Kallas further advocated for Pakistan to assume a mediating role in the complex diplomatic efforts.

She highlighted the need for sustained dialogue to de-escalate tensions and ensure stability in the region. The ongoing negotiations represent a critical juncture in addressing the situation and mitigating potential risks to international trade and security. The European Union remains committed to a measured and strategic approach, prioritizing diplomatic solutions while considering all available tools to address the evolving security landscape.
