The Directorate for Protection and Salvation has reported that the city water main in Gostivar contains Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. Officials noted that the contamination was detected in the water supplied through the system. According to the director of the Directorate, the presence of these bacteria renders the water microbiologically unsafe and poses health risks, particularly to individuals with compromised immune systems.
The bacteria are known to cause infections affecting the skin, eyes, and ears. Furthermore, the contamination carries the risk of leading to urinary tract and lung infections, making sensitive populations particularly vulnerable. A significant concern highlighted was the bacteria’s reported high resistance to many common antibiotics.
Despite the contamination, the authorities advised that the water from the main can still be utilized for drip irrigation purposes for a limited duration. The report details the public health implications associated with the bacterial presence within the municipal supply system in Gostivar.
