Greek authorities conducted a significant seizure of illegal refrigerant containers at the border crossing between Macedonia and Turkey. Personnel from the Greek Royal Services of the Supreme Authority for Public Revenues (AADE) discovered and confiscated a total of 1,296 containers of prohibited refrigerant from two border patrol vehicles. According to reports from the Athens MIA, the total value associated with the confiscated materials, including associated taxes and donations, exceeds 338,000 euros.
The operation was part of heightened border controls implemented to prevent the spread of diseases, specifically referencing Schweitzer, and to safeguard local livestock populations. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at the Dojran border crossing. During routine inspections of a truck bearing Macedonian registration plates that contained empty cargo containers, authorities discovered a specialized double barrier.
Further investigation revealed that 296 containers of prohibited refrigerant, identified as Type R134a, were also seized. This secondary finding alone accounted for an estimated tax and donation value of approximately 55,000 euros. The operation underscores ongoing efforts to secure the border region.
The confiscation highlights the interception of illegal trade routes attempting to move regulated substances across the Macedonia–Turkey border. Authorities continue to maintain vigilance to enforce environmental regulations and public health standards along this critical international passage.
