Aleksandar Vucic, the President of Serbia, stated that he will not accept responsibility for any statements concerning potential modifications to the watercourses of the Ibar River. He clarified that his authority is exclusively limited to the watercourses situated within the national territory of the Republic of Serbia. Addressing recent reports suggesting that temporary institutional leaders might be held accountable for changes to the river’s watercourses, President Vucic emphasized that any decisions regarding these natural features must be made strictly in accordance with the internal legal framework of Serbia.
“I decide on the watercourses on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in accordance with the internal law of the Republic of Serbia,” Vucic stated. He added that experts and engineers, upon review, would present methods for implementation, and he would not assume liability for external claims. The President stressed that Serbia will address its own national interests independently.
“We will only deal with our problems. We have our own interests and we deal with our own interests,” he asserted. His comments directly responded to media reports that featured comments from representatives of various institutions regarding accountability for the Ibar River’s watercourses.
By making this public statement, Vucic sought to delineate the scope of governmental authority, confirming that decisions impacting the physical geography and the watercourses within Serbian territory fall under Serbian domestic jurisdiction alone.
