This innovative technology has drawn inspiration from similar applications previously implemented in nations such as Chile and the United States.
The development of this project was spearheaded in Brazil by Mariana Robran, the founder of the non-governmental organization Fiotrar. Following its conceptualization, initial testing was conducted in Enseada de Búzios, located on the coast of Rio de Janeiro. At this site, a barrier utilizing the specialized material was installed to mitigate the risk of oil contamination.
An engineer overseeing the barrier system explained that the filters are impregnated with orange peel components, which aid in containing the spilled oil. The human hair serves as a crucial structural and filtering support element for the entire Fiotrar barrier system. The development marks a localized effort to apply sustainable, natural materials to address significant ecological challenges posed by marine pollution.
