The Macedonian Ministry of Transport announced a major upgrade for the national railway system following the signing of a contract for financial assistance from the World Bank. Minister of Transport, Aleksandar Nikoloski, confirmed that the acquisition of new wagons and electric locomotives, supported by a grant totaling one million euros, will form part of the most significant transformation of the Macedonian Railways-Transport. During the signing ceremony, which included the World Bank Director for Macedonia, Carol Mezhovan, Nikoloski detailed how the funds will facilitate the reform and functional restructuring of MŽ Transport.
He stated that the Ministry has a comprehensive vision for modernizing the entire railway transport infrastructure. According to the Minister, the necessity for such an investment is driven by observable increases in both cargo and passenger traffic. Nikoloski highlighted that the sector has shown positive performance metrics during the first four months of the year, noting substantial growth in the volume of transported passengers and overall cargo movement.
The infusion of this funding is crucial for supporting the operational expansion required by the growing demand. The modernization effort aims to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the rail network, ensuring that the transport system can adequately handle the current and projected increases in commercial and public travel. The partnership with the World Bank is positioned to provide the necessary capital for integrating modern rolling stock and improving overall system functionality.
