Unemployment and Underemployment Remain Elevated, Agency Reports
The Federal Employment Agency (BA) reported that the number of unemployed and underemployed individuals totaled 31,000 over the last 12 months. The agency’s data indicates a significant factor in ongoing discussions regarding the domestic economy’s health. Specifically, the underemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point in the last month, reaching 6.3 percentage points.
This figure represents a notable, though still elevated, level. Agency Director Andrea Nales emphasized the importance of these figures, stating that “when these numbers do not add up, it is not a good thing.”
Alongside the underemployment statistics, the agency noted a substantial increase in open, yet unfilled, job positions. Over the last year, the number of these vacancies grew by 8,000.
The agency’s findings highlight a complex economic landscape. While the underemployment rate has seen a slight reduction in the last month, the overall number of individuals experiencing unemployment or underemployment remains a concern. Further monitoring by the agency is expected to continue assessing the state of the labor market.
