WHERE IS THE BODY OF CONTROL? – WHO IS PANICED BY THE NEW CASES

The director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Chikwe Ihekweazu, has stated that the officially reported number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) does not reflect the true scope of the epidemic. He issued a warning that the actual extent of the outbreak could be two to four times greater than the figures currently recorded. Ihekweazu detailed significant inconsistencies in the data collection process across the country.

He specifically noted that in Bunia, the epicenter of the epidemic within the Ituri province, one hundred percent of newly identified cases are not being recorded on established contact lists. In contrast, he observed that in provinces with a lower incidence rate, such as North Kivu, new cases are systematically documented on these contact lists, a detail that is reflected on current mapping resources. According to the latest available data, the DRC has reported an Ebola epidemic for the fourth time.

The WHO’s statement underscores challenges in surveillance and reporting infrastructure, suggesting that the recorded number of infections is likely an underestimate. The discrepancy between the documented number and the potential reality highlights the ongoing need for comprehensive epidemiological monitoring to accurately assess the public health situation.
