Tivat Municipality Faces Legal Challenge Over Street and Square Renaming Process

The Tivat Municipality is facing a legal challenge following a series of decisions regarding the renaming of streets and squares within the city. The dispute centers around actions taken by the Oblast Council beginning in April 2007. At that time, the Oblast Council unilaterally altered the names of several streets and squares, assigning Albanian names to six locations and three others to names reflective of Macedonian heritage, without the approval of the central government.

This action prompted a formal initiative presented to the Ordinary Court in February 2025 by the Council of the People’s Liberation and Anti-Fascist War of Macedonia 1941-1945. The court was seeking to assess the validity of the initial dismissal of the council’s actions. A subsequent presentation of the initiative to the Ordinary Court is scheduled for March 2026.

Portalb.mk will continue to report on the ongoing chronology of this process, which began in 2007 and is now subject to legal scrutiny. The core issue remains the legality of the Oblast Council’s renaming decisions concerning the city’s public spaces.
