Western Balkans Forum Focuses on Energy Potential Amid Global Crisis

The Western Balkans region is poised to address the current global energy crisis by capitalizing on untapped renewable energy resources. This was the central theme of the opening of the regional forum for climate, energy transit and sustainable development – ME 2026, highlighted by Christian Mitkoski. Speaking at the event, Mitkoski emphasized the need to view the unfolding energy situation as an opportunity for the Western Balkans.

The region, encompassing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia, possesses the potential to generate an estimated 260 terawatt-hours of new renewable energy capacity annually. Mitkoski stressed the importance of collaborative action within the Western Balkans to contribute to Europe’s energy security. He called for the development of strategic ideas and suggestions for transforming this potential into tangible solutions.

The forum aims to facilitate necessary changes across the region, fostering a united approach to addressing the our shared challenges and bolstering the Western Balkans’ role as a vital contributor to the European continent. The focus remains on sustainable development and responsible energy transition.
