Earthquake Impacts Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale struck the central region of Indonesia on Tuesday, resulting in at least one fatality and 38 injuries. The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 43 kilometers southeast of Palu, a coastal city in Central Sulawesi, at a depth of ten kilometers. The earthquake triggered widespread panic among residents of Palu, which has a population of around 400,000.

Thousands fled their homes and sought refuge in open spaces as a precautionary measure. Authorities, including the National Agency for Disaster Management, responded to the emergency. Several hospitals were forced to evacuate patients due to the severity of the event.

Initial reports indicate that 38 individuals were transported to medical facilities, with thirteen sustaining critical injuries. Abdul Muhairi, a spokesperson for the National Agency for Disaster Management, confirmed the challenges faced by healthcare providers. Rescue and assessment efforts are currently underway in the affected city of Indonesia.
