Ten years have passed since one of the most devastating natural disasters to affect Macedonia. On August 6, 2016, a powerful weather system characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall caused extensive devastation across the Skopje region. The resulting damage was substantial, encompassing both physical infrastructure and a tragic loss of life.
The Polog region experienced some of the most severe damage attributable to the weather event, while the Skopje area was particularly impacted by extreme winds. Within a single 24-hour period, the main city recorded an astonishing 93 liters of rain per square meter. Furthermore, more than 800 thunderstorms were documented within the first two hours alone.
The northwest quadrant was among the hardest-hit areas, with the adverse weather conditions creating chaos in multiple localities, including Stankovci, Sinegliska, Smilkovci, Crsehovo, and Araçinovo. The combination of extreme weather led to massive flooding, significant material damage, and numerous human casualties. Official reports confirmed that the total loss of life in the Skopje region reached 22 people.
