Earthquakes Strike Crete, Evacuations Triggered

Two earthquakes impacted the Greek island of Crete today, prompting evacuations and localized concerns. The initial tremors, measuring 4.6 and 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred within a few minutes of each other around noon. Following the events, authorities implemented precautionary measures, including the temporary closure of a beach area in Xerokampos village, near Sitia, due to falling rocks resulting from the seismic activity.

A subsequent earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck the village of Zakros on October 12th, triggering a response from emergency services. However, seismologists have clarified that this event is not connected to the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred near Arkalochori approximately two weeks prior. Professor Ethymios Lekkas, president of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation of Greece, explained that the two earthquakes originated from distinct geological faults.

The situation on the island of Crete is currently being monitored, and authorities are assessing any further potential impacts. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and tourists on the affected island.
