The Treaty of Gibraltar and Spain was signed. The end of the borders

An agreement was formally signed in Brussels on Tuesday between the European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, and the British Minister for Europe, Stephen Dauby. During the ceremony, Fabian Picardo also presented the Gibraltar grant, according to reports from the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP). The comprehensive accord is set to eliminate all physical barriers and controls previously operating across the contested border separating Gibraltar and Spain.

A central component of the agreement outlines plans for the eventual integration of the territory into both the Schengen zone and the EU single market. Crucially, the document explicitly guarantees British sovereignty over Gibraltar. The cessation of routine border checks is scheduled to take effect at midday, meaning that documentation checks will no longer be required for daily travel between Gibraltar and the Spanish city of La Línea, a route utilized regularly by residents.

Gibraltar, a small territory situated at the southern tip, has a population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants. The signing marks a significant step toward normalizing cross-border movement between the two jurisdictions. The established framework aims to facilitate smoother economic and personal exchange while maintaining the agreed-upon status of the region.
