The slaughter of 24 tons of chicken meat from Brazil due to the spread of avian influenza

Import of Brazilian Chicken Meat Blocked Due to Biosecurity Concerns

Official veterinarians from the Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) have halted the import of 23,685 kilograms of frozen chicken meat originating from Brazil. The decision was based on non-compliance with import notification requirements related to a ban on live animal imports used for breeding, implemented to prevent the introduction of highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. The shipment, produced in January 2025, fell under the scope of a previous import ban that remained in effect until August 1, 2025.

This ban targeted shipments of chicken meat produced from animals slaughtered, loaded, and certified prior to that date. Border authorities intercepted the shipment and prevented its entry into the country. The FVA stated that the import was stopped due to the shipment’s origin and production timeline.

Further import activity of this type will be suspended in December 2025, continuing the agency’s biosecurity measures. The agency’s actions underscore ongoing efforts to safeguard the country’s poultry industry from potential outbreaks of avian influenza. This incident involved a significant quantity of chicken meat from Brazil.
