Fudzimori Maintains Lead Following Preliminary Vote Count
Preliminary results from Peru’s election indicate a strong advantage for Keki Fudzimori, the right-wing candidate, over his left-wing rival, Roberto Sanchez. With 99.86% of the votes counted, Fudzimori secured 50.12% of the total votes, significantly surpassing Sanchez’s 49.88%. According to data released by the National Election Processes Office (ONPE), Fudzimori amassed a lead of over 43,000 votes within a sample of more than 19 million votes.
This outcome reflects the support garnered by the candidate of President Alberto Fudzimori. However, the final tally remains uncertain. Thirteen-one ballot boxes remain to be counted, representing approximately 39,300 votes.
These outstanding votes could potentially impact the results, though they are unlikely to alter the current lead. Sanchez has expressed concerns regarding the outcome, asserting the need to reconsider the distribution of votes. He argued for a thorough examination of the results, characterizing the situation as involving “serious” opposition.
The election commission continues to monitor the remaining vote counts.
