According to reports, the size of the contamination increased substantially, growing from an estimated 20 square kilometers on July 20 to approximately 600 square kilometers by August 4. The source of the pollution is linked to the tanker “Karolin Benzigi.” This vessel had loaded one million barrels of oil at a Russian Black Sea terminal in May. The tanker’s movements drew international attention, as the United Kingdom placed it under sanctions in February due to concerns regarding the shipment of Russian oil. The incident escalated on June 6 when a series of explosions tore the tanker apart.
Reports indicate that the crew was unable to prevent the damage, resulting in the sinking of more than half of the vessel.
