Unexploded World War I Grenades Recovered in Bitola Villages

The Bitola Source Region (SRC BITOLA) has reported the discovery of unexploded grenades dating back to the First World War in two villages near Bitola, North Macedonia. The incidents occurred in Krkliino and Medzitlija. In Krkliino, B.M.

(55), a resident, reported finding an unexploded grenade while undertaking land reclamation work in his yard. Following the report, a pyrotechnician from the Directorate for the Protection and Salvation of the Grenade examined the device and confirmed its origin as a First World War-era grenade. Subsequently, police officers from the Patrol Team in Medzitlija located a separate unexploded grenade.

Again, a pyrotechnician from the Directorate for the Protection and Salvation of the Grenade was dispatched and verified the grenade’s historical origin – a remnant of the First World War. Both grenades are now under the care of the Directorate for the Protection and Salvation of the Grenade, ensuring proper handling and disposal. Authorities emphasized the continued presence of potentially hazardous materials from the First World War in the Bitola region.
