The EEA system in Greece may be suspended temporarily

Greece to Temporarily Suspend EEA System at Border Crossings

Greece intends to temporarily suspend its participation in the European Exchange and Area (EEA) system at certain border crossings, according to Deputy Minister for Citizens Protection, Yanis Lambropoulos. The move is aimed at restoring normal traffic flow for passengers and vehicles. The suspension is anticipated to occur if a significant volume of traffic accumulates at a border crossing, specifically with the goal of facilitating the movement of EU citizens.

Lambropoulos announced that the temporary suspension could extend until September 6th. Following a period of closure, Greece reopened the Evzoni border crossing with North Macedonia to EU citizens on July 1st. This reopening was initially implemented without the EEA system in place.

Officials stated that the temporary suspension of the EEA system is a precautionary measure designed to manage potential congestion and ensure efficient border operations. The decision reflects ongoing efforts to optimize traffic flow and maintain seamless travel for EU residents crossing into Greece. The implementation of the EEA system will be temporarily paused at affected crossings.

Further details regarding specific crossings subject to this suspension are expected to be released shortly.
