Construction activities for the second phase of the Skopje-Blagoevgrad motorway are currently in progress. This significant infrastructure project is scheduled for completion within four years and will connect to the existing 1.5-kilometre motorway near Blagoevgrad. The planned construction scope is extensive, incorporating five tunnels, eight bridges, eleven overpasses, four galleries, and nine overpasses.
The work will be executed by the domestic construction firm, “Granit” AD Skopje. Kostra Trajanovski, director of the State Project Implementation (SPI) and the primary project sponsor, noted the ambitious timeline for such a complex undertaking. Trajanovski highlighted that the integration of numerous tunnels, viaducts, bridges, galleries, and overpasses within a relatively short timeframe presents considerable technical challenges for both the project planning teams and the construction contractors.
The development represents a major civil engineering effort, designed to improve transportation links between Skopje and Blagoevgrad. The scale of the planned infrastructure—including multiple complex structural elements—underscores the magnitude of the current construction phase. The completion of this second phase is anticipated to significantly enhance regional connectivity, connecting seamlessly with the already established motorway segment in the vicinity of Blagoevgrad.
