Pendarovski Admits SDSM Considered Returning Gruevski
Former SDSM President Stevo Pendarovski has acknowledged that his presidential cabinet discussed the potential return of Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. The admission came during an interview with the official news service. According to Pendarovski, transcripts of the discussions were maintained, alongside what the cabinet deemed to be the factual account of the situation.
Pendarovski stated that the consideration of Gruevski’s return originated within the SDSM party. He explained that the primary objective was to strategically weaken the VMRO-DPMNE party ahead of the 2024 elections. “The VMRO, at that time, was considered an opposition party,” Pendarovski asserted.
“It was appropriate to utilize and, in certain circumstances, to leverage their position. Furthermore, the cabinet circulated a transcript and shared it with the American ambassador at the time, without a full understanding of the implications.”
The discussion centered around documenting and potentially releasing information related to Gruevski’s activities and political standing. The SDSM’s actions, as outlined by Pendarovski, were intended to influence the political landscape during the period leading up to the election.
