Sofia is not interested in escalation, Bulgarian Minister Petrova said about the most important issues for the blockades of the Macedonian-Bulgarian border

Bulgarian Minister Condemns Border Blockades Ahead of Ohrid Agreement Talks

Sofia – Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova Chamoeva has expressed strong disapproval of recent initiatives to block the Bulgarian-Macedonian border, stating they are counterproductive and potentially damaging to ongoing negotiations regarding the Ohrid Agreement. The blockade, involving the closure of three border crossings, was announced on June 18th. Speaking on June 21st, Minister Petrova emphasized that these actions would negatively impact discussions taking place at the Ohrid Assembly.

She asserted that the blockades are unrelated to the Bulgarian government’s efforts and would not serve to protect national interests. “We understand the potential for non-governmental organizations to organize events,” Minister Petrova stated, “but these actions are not aligned with the Bulgarian government’s priorities.” She further clarified that any offers of vaccine shares would not be utilized by the Bulgarian government and would not contribute to safeguarding national interests. The Bulgarian minister’s comments underscore the government’s determination to continue pursuing a diplomatic resolution to the border issue and maintain momentum in the Ohrid Agreement talks.

The situation remains a point of concern for the Bulgarian government.
