Supreme Court Leaders Convene in Skopje to Address Judicial Independence and Trust

Skopje, North Macedonia – The XVI Annual Conference of Presidents of Supreme Courts from Central and Eastern Europe commenced this week, focusing on critical issues surrounding judicial independence, public trust, and effective communication within the court system. The event, hosted by the Supreme Court of North Macedonia, will formally begin tomorrow. The conference brings together the highest representatives of 13 Supreme Courts across the region, alongside judges from the State Attorney’s Office of North Macedonia and experts from international organizations.

A key element of the opening session will be a student-led discussion examining the vital role of public support in maintaining judicial independence and the health of democratic institutions. Participants will explore the argument that simply exchanging ideas and best practices is insufficient to address shared challenges. President Gordana Siliçanovska Davkova highlighted the precarious status of the judiciary, emphasizing the importance of good communication between judges and upholding fairness as core tenets.

The overarching goal of the conference is to reinforce the principles of court independence and foster stronger relationships between the judiciary and the public. Discussions are expected to center on strategies for bolstering trust and ensuring the continued integrity of the legal system.
