Northern France Faces Electricity Shortage Affecting Thousands
Authorities in northern France are addressing an ongoing electricity shortage impacting approximately 68,000 households, primarily due to elevated regional electricity costs. The disruption is being actively managed with a focus on restoring power to critical infrastructure. Priority repairs are underway at health centers and other facilities, including elderly care homes, scheduled to be completed on Tuesday.
During this period, electricity consumption within these locations will be reduced by 20%. The cause of the shortage is attributed to a transformer defect, which officials describe as an accidental event exacerbated by the current extreme weather conditions. “The incident was accidental and was caused by the current heat wave,” stated a government release.
“No one has been injured.”
Record temperatures across Europe, currently 18 degrees Celsius above normal according to the German Weather Service’s Climate Monitor, are contributing to the strain on the electricity grid. These high temperatures are driving increased demand for cooling, further complicating the situation. Electricity supply restoration efforts are ongoing, with authorities monitoring the situation closely and providing updated forecasts regarding the expected timeline for full service recovery.
