Paris Officials Raise Concerns Over Canal Pouring Risk as Temperatures Rise
Paris officials are addressing growing concerns regarding the potential for canal pouring to contribute to forest fire risk. Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire announced that supervised canal pouring will be permitted from a distance of 100 meters from the waterway, reports Figaro. The announcement follows a period of intensive efforts to manage the activity.
Grégoire stated that he observed a lack of effectiveness in deploying police resources to prevent young people from pouring into the canal during periods of high temperatures, specifically in mid-May when temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius. “We have been working intensively for the last month to change the situation and to remove the possibility of pouring under the supervision, instead of banning it,” Grégoire explained. The mayor emphasized the potential for the canal to become a significant source of forest fires, a concern expected to begin within the next week.
The decision to allow pouring from a distance reflects a shift in strategy from a previous ban, prioritizing a managed approach to mitigate the associated risks. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
