Panenka Ball Celebrates 50 Years Since Historic Release
The iconic “Panenka” ball will be celebrated this year marking its 50th anniversary since its legendary release. The historic moment occurred fifty years ago in Belgrade, at the Maracana stadium, where Antonin Panenka, a Czechoslovakian goalkeeper, executed the maneuver that secured a continental title. During the final series, Panenka faced off against Sepp Maier, the German goalkeeper, a match that set a record for the series.
Panenka’s decisive action – placing the ball delicately into the goal – proved pivotal in the victory. Antonin Panenka, now a leading figure within the team, reflected on the event. “As long as I am proud of that ball, but on the other hand, I feel a sense of shame,” he stated.
“Throughout my career, I dedicated myself to popularizing football, and in my view, my entire career has been defined by this single play – the ‘Panenka’ ball.”
The release of the ball remains a significant moment in football history, recognized for its audacious technique and impact on the sport.
