A group of fifty deputies from the UK Parliament has urged authorities to ban the Russian animated series, “Masha and the Bear.” The deputies stated in a letter to ministers that the series constitutes a “smear campaign” and serves as “subtle Russian propaganda,” alleging that the media is being used for such purposes. The concerns were raised after it was reported by The Guardian that the American company Netflix had acquired the rights to two seasons of the children’s film. In their correspondence, the deputies advised that British authorities should consider banning the show, which they characterized as representing “a welcome image of Russian propaganda.”
Specifically, the deputies cited objectionable scenes within the episodes.
These included instances where the main character, Masha, was depicted wearing a tank top and a uniform reminiscent of the Soviet period. Additionally, the deputies pointed to an episode where they claimed the bear’s tail represented Russian propaganda. The parliamentary group’s letter suggests a belief that the content of the series promotes narratives deemed inappropriate for public consumption in the UK.
