According to the National Bank, electronic transactions in Macedonia reached a record high during the first quarter of 2026. In the initial three months of the year, Macedonian and foreign citizens collectively spent 16.3 billion dinars, equivalent to 265.9 million euros through online channels. This figure represents an 18.1% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
Overall, the total volume of transactions reached 7.6 million. Analysis of the spending reveals distinct patterns in consumer activity. The largest portion of the funds spent was directed toward domestic online sellers, accounting for 156.2 million euros.
Conversely, purchases made from foreign websites totaled 109.7 million euros. A notable trend observed was the increasing activity of international buyers engaging with Macedonian e-traders. Data concerning foreign card usage highlights this growing cross-border digital commerce.
The number of transactions utilizing foreign cards saw a substantial rise of 44.4%, while the associated spending also increased by 10.9%. These figures indicate a significant deepening of international participation in Macedonia’s digital economy. The data confirms robust growth across the sector, demonstrating both increased domestic digital commerce and a notable expansion of international spending habits within the local e-commerce ecosystem.
