French Ministry Announces School Closures Due to Extreme Heat
The French Ministry of National Education, led by Eduard Gherghe, has announced the closure of 845 schools and faculties across the country in response to ongoing heatwave conditions. An additional 1,800 establishments will operate on a modified schedule, limiting attendance to early morning and evening shifts. According to BFM TV, the decision primarily affects departments currently under a “red alert” for extreme heat.
Gherghe emphasized the ministry’s priority for maintaining educational continuity, stating, “The principle is that the continuity of the service must be maintained.”
The closures are being implemented based on a system of checks designed to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. Gherghe explained that schools and faculties will be closed if there is a definite risk of harm to personnel or children. The threshold for triggering these closures is 42 degrees Celsius, as reported by the French meteorological service.
