Macedonia Announces Official Recognition of ‘Macedonian Ruby’
The Minister of Energy, Sanja Božinovska, has formally announced the official recognition of the “Macedonian ruby,” solidifying its status as a semi-scarab stone native to North Macedonia. Speaking at a briefing with reporters, Minister Božinovska expressed gratitude to the Geological Plant for their collaborative efforts. The newly designated “Macedonian ruby” is a geological and aesthetic phenomenon.
Specifically, it’s a corundum mineral distinguished by its characteristic cherry-red coloration, resulting from chromium within its crystal structure. Deposits of this ruby are primarily found in the regions surrounding Prilep and within the Maroevo mountains. This discovery represents the only naturally occurring ruby of this quality found in Europe that is subsequently processed locally.
The stone’s unique aesthetic properties and collection value are significant. Minister Božinovska indicated that further announcements regarding other geological species and ore deposits are planned. The recognition underscores the importance of these natural resources to the macedonian economy and highlights the distinctive nature of the ruby.
