Kostadinovska-Stojčevska: The law on Macedonian language has not been discussed for two years

The implementation of the Macedonian language law has reportedly seen no discussion for the past two years. A supervisory action aimed at enforcing this legislation was launched today, following a press conference held by Besera Kostadinovska-Stojchevska, a representative of the SDSM. The launch of this action represents a significant political initiative concerning the status of the national language.

According to the statements made by kostadinovska, the process was originally slated for a different date, citing discrepancies in the timeline. Specifically, she noted that while the initiative was initially presented on March 23rd, the start of the supervisory measures was postponed from May to the current date due to delays attributed to the government and the Assembly. The push for the law was spearheaded by the SDSM and the ruling coalition.

The formal presentation of the initiative itself had taken place on July 6, 2026. The timing of the supervisory action, therefore, marks a renewed effort to move the legislation forward despite the previously stalled proceedings. The core focus of the announcement centers on the necessity of enforcing the existing language law.

The SDSM’s move signals a concerted effort to overcome legislative inertia and ensure that the provisions of the language law are actively implemented across relevant sectors. This supervisory action aims to provide a concrete mechanism to address the prolonged period during which the law has lacked substantive discussion within parliamentary bodies.
