European Council President Highlights Historical Link Between EU and Eastern Balkans

TIVAT – During a press conference addressing the situation in the Eastern Balkans, Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, emphasized the deep historical connection between the region and the European Union. Speaking in Tivat, Costa noted that the history of the Eastern Balkans is inextricably linked to the broader narrative of European integration. Costa’s comments followed a plenary session focused on the issue.

He highlighted the significant progress made over the past two decades, specifically referencing the anticipated accession of Montenegro as the 28th member of the European Union by 2028. The process of enlargement is entering a new phase, according to the President. “What we have achieved in just 20 years is unbelievably impressive,” Costa stated.

Discussions centered on the commencement of contract negotiations for Montenegro’s accession, which began in 2013. The President underscored the importance of recognizing the longstanding relationship between the European Union and the Eastern Balkans. The focus remains on continued dialogue and cooperation to support Montenegro’s integration into the European framework.
