Iran Postpones Treaty Ratification Amidst Lebanon Concerns
Iran has not yet finalized the ratification of the recently announced treaty, according to statements from Iranian officials. The potential signing of the agreement is contingent upon the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, as stated by Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy for communication and information in the Iranian president’s cabinet. Tabatabaei communicated via social network X that ongoing actions by the “Zionist regime” in Lebanon are projected to negatively impact the treaty’s viability.
This follows announcements from Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who indicated Iran would refuse to sign the protocol intended to annul the original peace treaty during ongoing discussions. The state news agency Fars reported Ghalibaf’s declaration, adding that Iranian delegation representatives anticipate continuing negotiations into the evening without a resolution. The Iranian delegation plans to continue discussions until evening, expressing a lack of expectation for a breakthrough.
The situation highlights the significant challenges surrounding the treaty’s implementation, particularly in light of the ongoing situation in Lebanon and Iran’s stance regarding the “Zionist regime.” The future of the treaty remains uncertain pending developments in the region.
