FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced his rejection of the proposal to sell the commercial rights associated with the World Cup to private investors. In an official statement, Infantino detailed the rationale behind his decision to oppose the venture. The rejected project, referred to as “Forward Enterprise” (FFE), was intended to establish a foundation for the future global participation of FIFA’s member associations and the sport generally, with a particular focus on supporting developing regions.
However, Infantino emphasized that the execution of such a large-scale initiative requires a broad consensus that the private investment model could not guarantee. According to the President, achieving the goals set out by the FFE project is contingent upon the support of the majority of FIFA member associations. Furthermore, Infantino stressed that any significant structural change concerning the governance or commercialization of the World Cup must involve comprehensive consultation.
This consultation process must include the FIFA Council, the various continental confederations, and the wider public. The FIFA leadership maintained that the integrity of the sport’s development relies on collaborative governance rather than external private funding structures alone. This stance clarifies that while the initial concept was noted, the necessary pathway for global expansion must be ratified through established FIFA channels.
