Slovakia Reaffirms Support for Macedonian EU Accession
BRATISLAVA – Slovak officials have reiterated strong support for Macedonia’s European integration process, stating that the country had “unjustifiably waited too long” within the European Union queue. The announcement was made by President Dragana Siljanovska-Dakovska and Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinić on June 2, 2026, at 18:41. Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Kalinić, Slovakia’s Minister for Integration and Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, emphasized the need for Macedonia’s membership to be predicated solely on meeting the Copenhagen criteria.
He indicated that Slovakia’s engagement with Macedonian state institutions has been a positive experience. “We have unjustifiably waited too long in the EU queue,” Kalinić stated. “Moving forward, membership should be firmly based on the fulfillment of these established criteria.”
The Slovak government’s continued backing comes as Macedonia seeks to advance its candidacy for EU accession.
The focus remains on achieving the benchmarks outlined by the European Union.
