Disease Outbreak Confirmed in Northeastern Nigeria
A significant health crisis has been registered in northeastern Nigeria, impacting 139 local self-governing units between May 1st and 28th. The affected areas include Madhuduri, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngalla, and Magumeri. According to Salek Abaka-Kaza, chief secretary of the state health agency in Borne, the first suspicious cases were registered on May 1st, with the epidemic confirmed on May 4th.
Abaka-Kaza reported that more than 100 new infections were registered within 24 hours, with the highest concentration of cases observed in the Madhuduri district. Madhuduri registered over 2,000 infections, while neighboring Jere recorded more than 1,000 cases. Deputy in the Madhuduri district, Dauda Ilia, corroborated this information, stating the outbreak’s timeline and geographic spread.
Health officials are working to contain the outbreak. The situation is considered one of the most serious health crises in recent years across the country. Investigations are ongoing to determine the specific cause and implement appropriate public health measures.
