Sexual Violence Cases Rise Significantly in North Macedonia in 2026

North Macedonia registered a concerning increase in sexual violence during May 2026, with a total of 191 cases reported throughout the month. This figure represents 70.5% of the total cases recorded in the preceding year, according to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The information was disseminated via Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and email channels.

The majority of the reported cases involved incidents of “physical injury,” totaling 130, followed by “endangering security,” which accounted for 52 cases. Investigations revealed that a significant proportion of the sexual violence cases targeted children. In addition to the 191 cases of sexual violence, the period under review also saw one homicide involving a child perpetrated by the Botoša State Police.

Furthermore, two instances of physical injury were documented. Authorities are actively investigating these incidents and working to address the concerning trend in reported cases of sexual violence. The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to monitor the situation and implement strategies to prevent and respond to these crimes.
