German experts from several institutions have recently conducted a collaborative visit to the ЈУ National Park “Pelister” in North Macedonia. This international scientific exchange involved specialists from the Hesse Forst-State Forestry Service in Germany, the Scientific Institute for Forestry in Göttingen, Germany, and faculty members from the Faculty of Forestry, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Engineering at the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje.
The purpose of the visit, which took place on July 6, 2026, was a joint effort aimed at exploring the genetic resources present within the region. The collaboration centers on the systematic discovery of valuable genetic material from key forest species. Specifically, the research focuses on the Macedonian elm, beech, and other diverse forest flora.
A primary objective for the visiting experts was the selection of qualified seedlings and the development of breeding programs for reproductive material. These resources are intended for potential utilization within Germany, highlighting a significant scientific partnership. The involvement of these international experts underscores the value placed on the natural biodiversity of the Pelister region.
The participation of Macedonian academics alongside the visiting German experts facilitates the transfer of specialized knowledge regarding sustainable forestry and genetic resource management. This initiative aims to support conservation efforts while establishing pathways for utilizing the rich natural assets of the Macedonian ecosystem for scientific and horticultural applications abroad.
