Bolivia Begins Removal of Weeks-Long Blockades Following State of Emergency

The military has commenced the removal of persistent blockades across Bolivia, following a declaration of a state of emergency by President Rodrigo Paz on Saturday. The emergency measures, potentially lasting up to 90 days, authorize the deployment of the Bolivian military to assist police in dismantling the road obstructions. President Paz announced the state of emergency, stating Bolivians “no longer can be hostages” of the ongoing blockades.

The situation has paralyzed the country for over six weeks, with the blockades instigated by unions, indigenous groups, and organizations suspected of involvement in drug trafficking, all critical of the government. The state of emergency was triggered following a contract signed Friday evening with the Bolivian Central Organization of Workers (COB), the country’s main union headquarters, which announced an end to the blockade measures as a result of exerted pressure. However, other organizations have indicated their intention to continue protests.

The military’s intervention aims to address the disruptions caused by the blockades and restore access routes. The duration of the state of emergency remains to be determined.
