Lavrov: SAD will continue to be an impartial mediator in Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov Announces End to SAD’s Mediator Role in Ukraine Talks

Moscow – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced today that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), commonly known as SAD, will no longer function as an impartial mediator in negotiations concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov stated this during discussions with diplomats from various countries. According to Lavrov, the shift in position reflects a response to demands originating from the United States.

He indicated that the terms of reference presented by the US appear to necessitate abandoning the SAD’s role as a neutral mediator. Instead, Russia is pursuing the complete removal of international sanctions. “What is being submitted to the United States, judging by the terms of reference, is what we are abandoning our aspiration for the role of impartial mediator and instead pursue the path of the complete elimination of sanctions against Russia,” Lavrov reportedly told the diplomats.

The announcement follows the change in US leadership in 2025. Lavrov’s comments suggest a strategic realignment in Russia’s approach to the conflict and its engagement with international diplomatic efforts. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been marked by a protracted period of negotiation, with the SAD previously acting as a key facilitator.

The statement highlights a significant shift in Russia’s stance and its prioritization of sanctions relief. Further developments in the negotiations remain uncertain. Keywords: lavrov, impartial, mediator
