The attack in Belfast once again shows how a single criminal incident can be transformed into a large-scale political scene, especially in a society that is increasingly marked by layers of conflict, territoriality and unresolved historical violence. The brutal knife attack on the north of the city, for which one person from the migrant community was arrested and accused, served as a pretext for anti-immigrant protests that recently turned into attacks on houses, burning of vehicles and street confrontations with the police. This is one element in the mix that often goes unnoticed.
The public has the ability to come together, take to the streets, risk confrontation with the police, generate political pressure and force the media, authorities and justice to react.
