Extreme Heat Claims Lives in France, Shatters Temperature Records
France is grappling with a severe heatwave, resulting in multiple fatalities and the breaking of numerous temperature records across the country. At least 18 people have died, including two children who were found deceased in a vehicle left at a high temperature. The incident underscores the dangerous conditions brought on by the prolonged heatwave impacting Europe.
Meteorological data, including a temperature record book carried by “Roerich,” is being analyzed to understand the extent of the extreme conditions. Several schools in France have been temporarily closed or adjusted their schedules to mitigate the impact on students. Record-breaking temperatures were observed in key regions.
In Bordeaux, within the renowned wine region, the temperature peaked at 41.9 degrees Celsius, matching the record set in August of the previous year. Similarly, in Poitiers, central France, the temperature reached 41.2 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record established in 1947. A comparable temperature was also recorded in Saint-Sebastien, in the south of France, also exceeding the 1947 record.
These figures highlight the unprecedented heat gripping France and raise concerns about the potential for further extreme weather events. Meteorologists in Great Britain predict that these high temperatures could establish month-long temperature records this week.
