North Macedonian Authorities Investigate Recent Wildfires, Suspect Arson
Skopje – The Ministry of Interior (MVI) is currently investigating a series of recent wildfires across North Macedonia, with officials suggesting a potential link to a series of incidents. Director of the State Fire and Rescue Service (DZS), Stojanče Angelov, stated that the agency believes the fires were deliberately set. Speaking on the “Sitel” program on June 16, 2026, at 22:36, Angelov emphasized the concerning nature of the rapid succession of fires.
“In such a short period, to have such serious fires is truly symptomatic and we are, of course, deeply concerned,” he said. Angelov confirmed that the MVI is actively working to identify those responsible. He noted that daily, numerous smaller fires occur throughout the country, but the situation remains under control.
“Every day across the country, we have around ten smaller fires,” Angelov explained. “Time will tell if anyone intentionally caused this fire, not just today’s.”
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are focused on determining the origins of the blazes. Further updates will be provided as the Ministry of Interior’s investigation progresses.
